TAUPIRI SUPERCROSS STILL GIVING BACK

Back to News

We are humbled to have recently met with Jenny Caulfield who was a crucial part of the legendary Taupiri Supercross. Many of you will have fond memories of the Supercross that ran for many years on the Caulfield’s farm off State Highway 1B in the heart of the Waikato. It was only up until about 5 years ago, you could drive past and still see the remnants of the track, with some fencing and the old lights in the distance!

While the Taupiri Supercross finished up many years ago, $7,974.50 remained left in the bank. Jenny (supported by committee member Darlene King) recently donated this money to MNZ and had strict instructions as to what it is to be used for.

To this end, significant donations have been made to both the Westpac Rescue Helicopter service, and to MNZ member Casey Waterhouse, to support in her rehabilitation following a serious motocross accident last year.

Also at their wishes, the remaining portion of this donation is to be used to purchase a shield detailing past and present New Zealand Motocross of Nations teams, as well as a special trophy that will be awarded each year to the Most Improved Rider across the New Zealand Supercross Championship series. This will be known as the Des Caulfield Cup, in memory of Jenny’s late husband who also played a vital part of the Taupiri Supercross story.

A huge thank you must go out to Jenny Caulfield and Darlene King for the generous donation and allowing MNZ to handle this on their behalf.
